Expressing sound visually
Feb.1
“Movement” “Flow”
Different modes of working:
- scientific
- symbolic
- expressive
- true representation
ENERGY-changing orientation(tension vs. comfortability)
How to visualize sound?
- properties
- attributes
- characteristics
- quality
Properties
form of sound(sound wave/vibrations)
How loud?
Direction?(multi-directional)
Speed(Frequency)
Repetition
Attributes, Characteristics, Quality
quiet
silentness
soft
pitch(high vs. low)
audible
rumbling vibrations(orchestra)
Does sound have color?
Timbre(sound changing vs. sound having mixture)
Ripples
- overtones/complexity
- noise(harsh or severe)/harmony(light or airy)
“Explore sound in simple ways”
Sound 2 (Group 6)
Feb. 8–9
- tried to create a softer effect to represent the marimba
- starting to move away from a linear representation
- introduced at a higher pitch and then goes down two steps in pitch
- goal: to make it look more intentional
Definitions:
how are things represented?
time: avoids linear, but places mine to the right of page, leading off, to signify end as it transitions into another part
pitch: higher pitched notes tend to lead upwards, lower pitch leads down
loudness: Larger marks represent louder noises
combination of large and dark marks combine
speed:closeness of marks
pattern: repetition in mark-making to show pattern
type of sound: strings are represented by lines, notes are more dot-like
Things to consider for next iteration:
Marimba:
- darker tones for ominous feel
- exaggerate(larger dots)
- faint dots at the beginning to fade into the sound
Bryce and I worked on the same page to create the following iterations:

Figure Drawing
Feb. 21
tone vs. line
“Gesture”-tension and energy
low vs. high energy poses
True proportion of the human figure
- proportions
- movement
- balance/posture
- tension

Goal for Monday:
3 drawings — one action
- beginning-middle-end
Ex: standing-sitting, climbing-jumping, cleaning dishes
2 points of view(side/front/“3/4”)
